The Last Letter

On 28 June, 1999, 2nd Rajputana Rifles was assigned the task to capture Tololing top during Kargil War. Major Padmapani Acharya was also part of this mission.

The battalion recaptured the Tololing top. But they lost Major Padmapani Acharya, who fought bravely and played a pivotal role in that mission. He was awarded nation's second highest gallantry award, "Mahavir Chakra".

But before this, his conversation with his father, showed his greatness and calm mind.

In the letter he wrote that

Don't worry about casualties, It's a professional hazard which is beyond our control, so why worry ; at least it's for a good cause.

He also mentioned lines from "Bhagavad Gita"

Hato Va Prapsyasi svargam, Jitya va Bhoksyase Mahim, Tasmad Uttistha Kaunteya, Yuddhava krit nischay

Translation :-

O son of Kunti, either you will be killed on the battlefield and attain the heavenly planets, or you will conquer and enjoy the earthly kingdom. Therefore get up and fight with determination

This letter is a source of inspiration for many like me. This shows the inner strength of Major Padmapani Acharya and also his dedication towards his duty. Nation will be always indebted to these bravehearts and their families.

Jai Hind !!
